Mawlynnong is recognised for its cleanliness. The village was awarded the title of “Asia’s

cleanest village” in 2003 by Discover India. In addition, the village has achieved 100 Percent literacy rate and women empowerment.

Also known as "God's Own Garden", community is the back bone of the village. Bamboo dustbins are kept for waste collection which is then re-collected and organized for composting to use as manure. Smoking and the use of plastic is also frowned upon, if not outright banned.


Interesting fact: A hundred year old European church sits in the village. It was built in 1902 by Welsh Christian Missionaries - the Church of Epiphany.

Nearby the village is the famous Living Root Bridge, which was a unique Khasi traditional

architecture created from one generation to another by weaving the roots of the Ficus Elastica tree in order to help people and the villages to connect with each other in the steep valleys and mountains.
