'Maw' in Khasi means ‘Stone’. The village is most famous for the gigantic formation of a
stalagmite, which resembles the shape of a 'shivling'. It is also one of the wettest areas as it receives the highest rainfall in India.

Mawsynram receives the highest rainfall in India - a whopping 39 feet of annual rainfall! In 2022, Mawsynram recorded the highest single day rainfall receiving 1000 mm or a little more than 3 feet of rain over 24 hours, beating its own record of highest single day annual rainfall in 1966 of 945 mm.
Fun fact: In 1985, Mawsynram entered the Guiness Book of World Record for receiving 83 feet of annual rainfall.
